David Stuckler and Sanjay Basu mention in their articles that the German neoliberals (Angela Merkel) did themselves in 2009 no austerity measures in Germany during this year of heavy worldwide economic depression (Financial crisis of 2007–08).
And in fact they didn’t. I know and remember that very well, because I’m a German myself.
One of the key elements of that stimulus package (Konjunkturpaket II) was called in Germany the “Abwrackprämie” or “Umweltprämie” (in English: “scrap bonus”) offering a substantial financial aid (around 2500 euros or 3200 dollars) in order to incentivize the German citizens to buy a new car. And this so called “Abwrackprämie” or “Umweltprämie” was very successful.
